Lahaina teen injured in crash
LAHAINA – A Lahainaluna High School student was hospitalized in critical condition after the moped he was operating hit a pickup truck Tuesday evening, police said.
The collision was reported at 6:08 p.m. on Honoapiilani Highway at Leialii Parkway.
The moped was heading south when the rider ran a red light at the Leialii Parkway intersection, police said. At the time, a Ford F-150 pickup truck was turning left from northbound traffic into Wahikuli State Wayside Park.
Police said the truck had a green arrow allowing it to make the turn, and the moped hit the passenger side of the truck.
The moped operator was identified as 17-year-old Christopher Boskoff of Lahaina.
He remained in critical condition Wednesday at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The pickup driver, a 48-year-old Lahaina man, and two female passengers were not injured, police said.
At Lahainaluna High School, where Boskoff is a junior, “we’re all praying for him,†said Principal Michael Nakano.
He said a school counselor described Boskoff as a popular student who is “very personable, easy to talk to, easy to work with.â€
