Moped mayhem ... 23&-search

The driver of a silver Avanti moped caught the attention of a UW police officer after it ran a red light at the intersection of 15th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 40th Street shortly before 9 p.m. Oct. 19.

Approaching another red light on University Way, the driver attempted to turn left without stopping.

According to the police report, "During this turn, the operator lost control of the vehicle and dumped the moped just north of the intersection, causing the rider and passenger to fall onto the pavement." The passenger was wearing neither a helmet nor eye protection, the officer noted.

When the officer approached the scene of the accident, the rider laughed, offering no excuse for the traffic offenses.

The officer cited the moped's operator for three traffic offenses totaling $303 -- one for each of the two red lights, and a third for a defective taillight.

The driver declined aid at the scene.
