MILWAUKEE-A 79-year-old Elkhorn man died Tuesday morning from injuries sustained after an oncoming car struck his moped the afternoon of Sept. 27.

Elmer E. Scheiby died at a Milwaukee-area hospital at 11:43 a.m., according to the Walworth County Sheriff's Department. An autopsy was scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

Scheiby was driving his moped westbound on Spring Valley Road near Sheridan Springs Road in Lyons Township at 2:17 p.m. Sept. 27. An oncoming Honda Civic lost control while coming around a curve and struck the moped.

The driver of the Civic, 17-year-old Mario D. Morales of Lyons, was cited for inattentive driving, driving too fast for conditions, operating left of center and operating without a license.

Morales and his two juvenile passengers were treated for minor injuries at area hospitals.

Investigation reveals Morales was eastbound on Spring Valley Road and entered a curve at a high rate of speed. He crossed the centerline, lost control and struck Scheiby's moped in the westbound lane.

There is no indication Morales was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to the sheriff's department.
