Multiple moped upsets ... news57.txt

SAULT STE. MARIE - Patrolling city police came upon a moped and driver that had passed out of control in an alley behind the 200 block Ashmun Street at 1:27 a.m. Friday morning. Upon sighting the police cruiser, the moped driver picked up the machine and sped off to parts unknown. Police followed at a controlled speed and lost track of the slow-moving motorbike. Some time later, however, city officers were told a Border Patrol vehicle spotted the moped and driver upended in the 100 block Water Street.

This time, when city officers approached, the slightly injured driver was unable to make a getaway and appeared unsteady on his feet from alcohol intoxication. Other symptoms of acute intoxication were noted by city officers, who called an ambulance for the driver, Brian M. Carmody, 39 of Sault Ste. Marie. Carmody was reportedly suffering a number of facial cuts from his dual moped crashes. He was taken to War Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Police did not apply the usual roadside sobriety tests because of Carmody's injuries, but requested a blood alcohol reading from the hospital and filed the crash reports with the county prosecutor for possible charges.
