MADISON — Joe Monty, a starting defensive end for the University of Wisconsin football team, had serious facial injuries after a motor vehicle accident Friday.

Monty, 22, was driving a moped when he slammed into the rear of a car about 2 a.m. Friday, police said.

The car's driver was southbound on North Park Street, approaching Dayton Street, and was stopped at a red light.

Monty didn't stop in time and the moped slammed into the car. Monty was not wearing a helmet.

He had numerous facial fractures, head trauma and lacerations to his face and legs, said Madison police spokesman Mike Hanson said.

His injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Monty was at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. Officials there said the family had invoked federal confidentiality laws, preventing them from releasing his condition.

"We were told he was lucky to be alive and his face had severe trauma," Hanson said.

It appeared Monty had been drinking before the crash and likely will face a drunken driving citation, Hanson said.

The driver of the car also may face a drunken driving charge, he said. That person was not injured.

The 6-foot-2, 258-pound Monty started 12 of 13 games last season for the Badgers.

A fifth-year senior from Fort Collins, Colo., he finished 10th on the Badgers in tackles last season with 30. He had 3½ sacks and 4½ tackles. Monty emerged last week from spring practice as the Badgers' No. 1 left defensive end ahead of Kurt Ware.
