Randy Knudson: State should push moped, scooter use

A letter to the editor
Dear Editor: Mopeds and scooters are the way to go for saving fuel. Look at the rest of the world, and you will see that the USA is behind the times.
According to a report by a cycle industry magazine, Wisconsin had the third highest number of scooters sold in the U.S., after California and Florida. I would hope that the state and university here would embrace the idea of saving fuel and resources by promoting more fuel-efficient ways to move about that already exist, such as scooters, rather trying to get rid of them by enforcing new parking laws and registration fees.
Wisconsin should be setting an example for the rest of the states, enforcing laws already on the books to keep roads (and sidewalks!) safe, and allowing more scooters to share the roads, and help us all keep the demand and cost of fuel down.
Scooters and mopeds are a safe, fun, exciting way to save money, commute, and enjoy the summer here in Madison, all at 80-100 mpg.
