CANTON - A Clyde man spent the night in the hospital after running his moped into the back of a tractor-trailer after leaving the Canton ABC Store Monday evening.

Walter R. Owens, 65, of Jones Cove Road, was charged with driving while impaired, hit and run and failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.

When police arrived at the scene of the accident, first responders were attending to Owens, who was lying on the ground with his motor scooter across his legs, according to a Canton police report. There was also a plastic bag containing several small bottles of Absolut vodka on the ground beside him, the report said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer told police that the driver of his flag vehicle called him while he was stopped at the intersection to let him know that Owens had struck the rear of the truck. The flag vehicle driver also told police that he first spotted Owens in the parking lot of the Canton ABC Store, and when he drove out of the lot, Owens struck a car traveling on Main Street. A woman arrived at the scene to speak with officers and reported that Owens hit her car as he was coming out of the ABC Store parking lot and nearly hit several more cars on Park Street before striking the rear end of the tractor-trailer.

A paramedic treating Owens at the scene told officers that the man told him he had been drinking. Owens was transported to Haywood Regional Medical Center for further treatment, and when an officer came to speak with him, he refused to take a blood test or answer any questions. The officer cited Owens and informed him that he has a court date on July 10.
