A Madison boy is recovering at University of Louisville Medical Center after a car hit his moped head-on.

Michael Benham, 17, was riding south on State Road 7 on a purple 2000 Elite moped when he was struck by a northbound driver, Aaron Jines, 37, of Dupont. Jines was driving a white 1991 Eagle Talon when he attempted to pass another vehicle near County Road 400-N, hitting the moped driver head-on.

Benham, who was not wearing a safety helmet, was flown to U of L Medical Center, where he is in fair condition.

Jefferson County Sheriff Bill Andrews said the moped driven by the teen did not have a properly functioning headlight.

Benham sustained severe injuries to his left elbow and hand, as well as trauma to his ribs, left foot and head.

No charges were filed in the accident, which happened at 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
