A red moped rested on its side against the curb in front of a house in the 4100 block of Lillie Street as thunder clouds formed overhead Wednesday. A trail of bloody clothes littered the middle of the road. K-9 police units began to search for a scent through alleys and yards in between nearby houses.

Inside a parked ambulance, a male victim lay dead.

Fort Wayne Police, responding to an apparent shooting at 4:15 p.m., found the victim wounded in the street and the moped knocked to the ground nearby. Medics worked on him for almost 25 minutes before they declared him dead at the scene.

It would be the city’s 11th homicide of the year. The Allen County Coroner’s Office likely will rule on the cause of the death Thursday.

As more and more police officers arrived on Lillie Street and more and more of the crime scene was taped off, residents of the southeast neighborhood began to congregate at the intersection of Baxter Street and Lillie. Some watched from the porches of their homes. Police blocked vehicle access to Baxter from both Anthony Boulevard and Winter Street.

According to police spokesmen Michael Joyner and John Chambers, witnesses told police they saw two or three suspects run from the area. A woman who declined to give her name said she saw a group standing around the victim while he stood straddling the moped. She then heard what sounded like three shots. As the group scattered, the victim called for help.

It was the second shooting in the area in just more than two months. On May 19, Jermaine Foster, 23, was driving his black Pontiac Firebird near the 3100 block of South Anthony when he was shot multiple times. He flagged down a police officer and lived.

If ruled a homicide, Wednesday’s shooting would be the second in Fort Wayne this month. On June 8, Rylor Edward Legacy was stuffed into the trunk of his mother’s car and driven to the 400 block of Eckart Street, where he was shot three times. Police have not arrested anyone in the case.
