PALMETTO -- Eldin Hahn knew there was trouble when a truck veered into his lane and abruptly stopped, nearly running his moped off the road.

The driver and his passenger got out and confronted Hahn, 75, who rarely takes out his moped but wanted a bite to eat at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

Without saying a word, one of the men reached into Hahn's back pocket and snatched his wallet, the brown one he's had for as long as he can remember.

The men jumped back into the truck, but the driver couldn't get away that fast. Hahn reached into the truck window, grabbing the man's shirt.

The men, sheriff's deputies said, got out and beat Hahn. He again reached into the truck as the men drove off, and was dragged for a short distance before he let go. The men took Hahn's wallet, which contained about $40 and his Social Security and health-care cards.

"You can get robbed anywhere, day or night. Bar. Restaurant. Store. Parking lot. You never know anymore," said Hahn, shirtless as he swept grass from his driveway Thursday before the afternoon rains rolled in.

"Had to be for dope," said Hahn, who was cut on his left knee and hand during the scuffle.

Hahn has lived at a mobile home park just north of City Hall for about a decade.

He moved to Manatee County in 1963 with his mother. The weather, he said, would help his mom's hay fever.

The Chicago-area native and former construction worker bought the moped last year. It makes getting around a little faster than his bike, he said.

Early Thursday, he was riding in the 900 block of 49th Street East near the CSX railroad tracks when the truck -- on the opposite side of the road -- veered into his lane.

Hahn was going to get a bite to eat -- his usual breakfast of eggs and home fries -- near Interstate 75.

The pickup, pulling a trailer, stopped in front of his moped. Hahn got off his bike.

The men in the truck didn't say anything to him, and Hahn doesn't recall saying a word to the two guys.

"Happened so fast," he said.

He confronted the men after they returned to the truck because he really wanted his wallet back.

"I know the cops ain't gonna find it. You might as well kiss it goodbye," said Hahn.

Anyone with information about the robbery is urged to call the Sheriff's Office at 747-3011, Ext. 2274.
