It happened shortly after midnight near the intersection of State Road 7 and Opa-locka Boulevard.

"The moped was traveling southbound on State Road 7. The SUV was traveling westbound on Opa-locka Boulevard," said Sgt. Anthony Baker of the Florida Highway Patrol.
Police said the SUV collided with the moped and fled the scene.
Witnesses told the FHP that a Florida Power & Light crew was working on a broken traffic light at the intersection, and that could have caused the crash.
"The moped and the SUV collided at the intersection," said Sgt. Anthony Baker. "It appears that the moped didn't stop for the non-working traffic light."
The traffic light is now working properly, reported NBC 6's Carlos Vergara.
Police are looking for a dark green or black Ford Explorer with front-end damage and a missing front right headlight.
Anyone with information should call the Florida Highway Patrol at 305-470-2500.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. -- Authorities are searching for the driver of a sport utility vehicle that hit and killed a man who was riding a scooter shortly after midnight Monday.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Opa-Locka Boulevard and Northwest 7th Avenue. Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the traffic lights at the intersection were not working at the time.
FHP troopers said the scooter failed to stop at the intersection and because the SUV was already there, the SUV driver would not have been at fault.

Witnesses told traffic investigators that the SUV was green or blue and was missing a front headlight.
Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
