On June 9, riding his moped home from work, Robb Long, 29, was struck and killed by a gray or silver Dodge Intrepid car that headed up a ramp onto Interstate 90 and never was caught.
"They just don't know what they did to our family," said Elsie Long, 76, the dead man's grandmother. "You'd even stop if you hit a dog. Most people would, anyway."
A Costco pharmacy counter worker, Long was riding through an intersection beneath the freeway when the car, waiting on a red light in the opposite direction, drove up on a concrete median to pass to the front of the line and smashed into his moped.
A witness who was stuck in traffic told detectives a passenger in the Intrepid turned to stare at Robb as the car sped away.
An anonymous caller to Secret Witness, a citizen-managed tip line, said two women offered a mutual acquaintance $50 to hide the Intrepid, believed to be a model 1998 to 2004. The caller also gave the first names of the people believed to have been in the car at the time.
With about 500 silver or gray Dodge Intrepids of that vintage licensed in Spokane County, including nearly 50 in the ZIP code that includes the crime scene, police have appealed without success for the tipster to provide a name and telephone number for investigators to call and ask more questions.
"If I can get that witness, or the person who was asked to hide the car, to contact me directly, they can remain anonymous," Spokane Valley Detective Donald R. Manning Jr. said. "That's fine."
Manning said he interviewed two girls about efforts to stash the car, but both denied any role.
