Monday, October 9, 2006 (Chennai):

Imagine carrying a moped in a suitcase so that you could ride your way home from a bus or a train.

This may soon become a reality as budding engineers at the IIT in Chennai have designed a model towards this, and that too all out of automobile junk.

The students were participating in a competition called the Junkyard Wars, to create mini motor vehicles out of junk.

The only functional 50 cc engine was the only functional item given to the contesting teams.

As per the rules, the models were supposed to be small enough to be carried in a trunk, and the designers had just 15 hours to complete their task.

"It's like the Frankenstein Monster, putting together bits and pieces and giving life to it," said a participant.

"When we heard the engine, it was amazing. It's like the roaring sound of the racing car," said another.

The miniature models had to clear a 50m driving test, and while some managed it in style, others went terribly wrong.

However, the moped designed by Chennai's IITians grabbed the prize money of Rs 15,000.

The event is a fine example of the spirit of engineering among the young students who all converted scrap into working models overnight.

And the winners, who are thrilled at being chosen as the best out four 280 contestants, now believe that they can attempt newer challenges.
