Juvenile arrested in Lahaina hit-run case
LAHAINA – Police arrested a 16-year-old Lahaina boy and are continuing an investigation into a hit-and-run collision that critically injured a moped rider Tuesday night in Lahaina.

The crash was reported at 8:03 p.m. on Honoapiilani Highway at Kaniau Road.

The moped and a 1992 two-door Honda Civic were both heading south on the highway before the collision, said Capt. Charles Hirata, commander of the Lahaina Patrol District. After being hit, the moped ended up on the shoulder of the northbound lane of the highway, Hirata said.

The moped rider, a 25-year-old Lahaina man, was taken by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center with critical injuries that were determined not to be life threatening, Hirata said.

While the car fled the scene, "there were several witnesses who stepped forward and gave information," Hirata said.

He said officers found the car abandoned nearby at Fleming Road and Ainakea Street.

Hirata said the 16-year-old driver later turned himself in at the Lahaina Police Station.

"He was going so fast that his airbags deployed," Hirata said, noting that the collision occurred in a 40-mph zone.

Neither the driver nor his two passengers – Lahaina girls, ages 14 and 15 – were injured, Hirata said.

The driver, who only had a driving permit, was arrested for driving without a license, leaving the scene of a crash involving injury and failure to render aid. He was later released to his parents.

Hey Wayne, Good to hear from you. I was about to put out an APB on you. This clip shows we need to be aware of all vehicles not just SUVs. The mopeder is very lucky. "He was going so fast that his airbags deployed," Hirata said, noting that the collision occurred in a 40-mph zone.". Jim
