KIHEI – A moped that caught on fire while in a garage Sunday morning caused approximately $1,500 in damage to a Kihei house, fire officials said.

Battalion Chief David Kamalani estimated damage to the home’s contents at $100.

He said the two-story house at 1915 Kaahele Place was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

The blaze was reported at 4:51 a.m. Kihei firefighters arrived at the scene at 4:58 a.m. and had the fire under control a minute later.

The fire was reported extinguished at 5:09 a.m.

MOPED FOUND WITHIN HOURS OF BEING STOLEN

LAHAINA – Within hours of the theft of a moped from a Lahaina parking lot, a Lahaina man was arrested last week when he was found with the vehicle, police said.

A Honokowai man had parked his red 2006 moped in the Moose McGillycuddy’s complex on Front Street about 1 p.m.

While he was in the restaurant for about 30 minutes, he saw the suspect walking the moped away, police said.

After police were called and a description was broadcast on the police radio, Lahaina patrol officer Tadd Makaiwi located the suspect and moped at a Lahaina residence, police said.

Robert “Robby” Heaton, 26, was arrested and charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.

The moped was returned to the owner.
