Vintage Vespa question re. fuel tank/petcock....

Postby mopedlar » Mon Aug 30, 2010 2:31 pm

I picked up a 1965 Vespa VBB. I'm trying to figure out how to access the petcock. The gas tank is below the rear luggage rack and unbolts, but the petcock linkage goes through the frame under the seat. How do I disconnect the linkage between the long petcock lever and the petcock before pulling the tank? or...does the petcock and attached lever also pull out when you pull the tank?

Might find something here Larry...
http://www.wotmeworry.org.uk/manuals/Vespa/
also try "modern vespa" and use the search function, should be some VBB threads there.

Lar,

scooterhelp.com has some good tutorals for working on Vespas but I didn't see anything in there for tank removal. I pulled the tank out of my smallframe and the petcock rod was cotterpinned to the petcock. It was accesible when I lifted the tank from the body.

Thanks! Scooterhelp.com had the procedure for removing tank, so I'm good to go. Evidently, the petcock lever will pull out of the frame as I maneuver the tank to remove it.

Thanks again for both of your help.

Hey Lar,

Was the VBB a barn find or is it a running bike? What does it need for work?

It was basically a "hidden in the back of the garage" find. It needs a new headlight glass, taillight lens and some cosmetic restoration. I've already started her up with carb cleaner, but I haven't put gas in the tank yet.

I bought her to restore, but I'm not sure what I want do with her at this junction.
