50cc Moped - URGENT, :/!

Postby JordBT50 » Tue Feb 15, 2011 7:22 pm

Hi all, I am new here to Moped Riders Association.
I am in a very urgent state - my ped has failed on me, 24 hours before I have to attend hospital, work, college, and a big ride to the misses house.

I am more than dependant on my 50cc 4-stroke moped this week, and if it isn't resolved by tonight, I must take it to a garage for at-least a diagnostics. I am not a happy bunny.

Basic details:
59' plate
4-stroke
50cc
Make: Baotion
Model: BT50 QT-9
2,800 km (1,800 miles roughly)
Kickstart and Electric start

What have I checked?
Petrol - plenty of it, maybe too much in my tank?
Spark - I own an NGK sparkplug that is generating perfect sparks
Carb - clean and emptied of petrol, for a restart
Ignition - lights work, petrol gauge moves, and all seems normal
Fuse - changed
Battery - lights are perfect and nothing seems to dim

Basically, my moped wouldn't start one morning. It started on saturday, and didnt get used sunday which is a first as I use it daily. Monday, I attempted to turn it on, but it just kept turning over and over, without starting up.

This evening, I found it just needed to be cleaned in the carb, and then kickstarted until it eventually starts up.

I attempted an electric start before I kickstarted - something went wrong.

It does 1 turn over, and then squeels as if the starter motor is sticking, or broken? I have very little experience with mopeds, or motorbikes, but I do know the basics.

My predictions?
Compression - ???
Starter motor - ???
Or something in the engine that now makes it fail to even turn over.

In anticipation of your responses!
Jord.

Cylinder flooded with fuel. Float assembly put back wrong when carb was cleaned. Can't compress a liquid--just my guess.

pull the sparkplug out and see if it will turn over.

Oh I see. I didn't clean the jets, only emptied the petrol as it seemed flooded, and I wanted to lose some petrol as I over-filled the tank a tiny bit.

It was only off for 36 hours, but in cold weather, I don't see why it didn't start as normal - after a few attempts?

Spark plug pulled just makes a squeel noise, like it doesn't turn over as it usually would, it just sparks against the cylinder head I think it is, and when sparkplug was put back in, it would turn over. But earlier a quick last electric attempt to start and it just failed. Won't turn over like usual, it just turns over once and then squeels. Usually it would have squeeled for one attempt of trying to start, this appeared to just be the starter motor being stuck, now it squeels until I release, but won't turn over on the next attempt.

Just asking, but what would the ped do if the following things occured?:
-Automatic choke broke?
-Starter motor broken, stuck, or damaged
-Flooded carb
-Carb float not being assembled back together properly.

If I do get this squeel fixed, will it eventually start? Or... sorry i'm a newb and this is frustrating.

When I had sparkplug out for testing, I definately didn't record a turn over? It just made a noise that basically told me to put the spark plug back into the slot, lol. After putting it back in, it had turned over but didn't fire up, not even once throughout these past few days. But when all of a sudden I did this electric start, it just slipped and now won't even turn over. The carb wasn't really taken apart, it was emptied of petrol, and made sure the holes weren't blocked. I don't recall removing the floats at all, but they may have come off and I may have incorrectly put them back on? Just a suggestion I guess, but I am pretty sure it was all assembled back together perfectly

If the motor won't kick over with the spark plug out, that engine's gonna have to come apart because it's seized. Sorry. :-(

Glad you got it fixed. By "kick over" I mean you attempt to kick start it and the engine turns over. Note that to turn over is not the same as to fire and run. Turning over means that the crank makes a full revolution.

Again, glad you got it fixed! And if it's just a gunked up carb, clean and rebuild that ish!
