Yamaha Towny MJ50J, 1982

Where is the CDI located on the MJ50J? What does it look like? This scooters plug gets all gunked up with unburned oil & gas and I suspect the CDI stops working when it gets warm
Thank you,
Tom

pg 20 of the manual. square box next to rectifier, fuses and turn signal box. Follow wiring back. Never seen one in the flesh. Hope helps.

John,
Thank you!! That diagram is the first time I've ever been able to locate a good picture of the CDI. I sure hope this solves my problem. I'm hoping that a new CDI will provide a constant & substantial spark to keep the fuel & oil burning. My darn plug keeps getting fouled & I'm thinking that it's because there isn't enough spark to keep things burning. I think I've ruled out about everything else. What do you think?? Sound Plausible??

This is a good site for parts. Good diagrams, but nothing that really depicts where the CDI is located. The diagram you provided looks like it is accessed from the top; raise the seat, remove the battery and the the bracket holding the battery. I'm at work now (slow day) and will post my findings later.

Thanks again!,
Tom

You may need to source a universal CDI to try and work on the Yammy.

Success!! I had to remove the battery & the metal tray that it sits in. Then I could see the CDI attached to the back side of a bracket that holds some other electrical components. From below I had to remove the bracket that it was attached to so I could remove it from the bracket. In all it took about 10 minutes. I already ordered a new one from www.boats.net. Hopefully this will keep the spark plug sparking.
