so where is the best place for parts?

Postby schwinnguy » Thu Jan 19, 2012 8:08 am

i picked up a 2000 tomos lx on craigslist with only 400 miles on it and it is in need of some parts. the windshield around the headlight is cracked. the carburator leaks gas. and the headlight only works on one setting. where is the best place for these parts?

I doubt you need an entirely new carb. You've probably got a loose fuel line or maybe a stuck float. You should start by taking it apart and cleaning everything. Check the gasket between the float bowl and the carb body as well.

You can get new parts, however, in lots of places. Just do a Google search on Tomos parts.

Or you can try Ike's Bikes, The Moped Junkyard, Treets, Heeters, Myrons Mopeds, et al. Be careful of Moped Warehouse; the guy has a spotty record.

thank you for that info. i will avoid that place you mentioned. this is the carborator i have been looking at. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tomos-Carbureto ... 41617f5ea6 but i'm not sure if it is the one i need. seems expensive for a bike i only paid $200 dollars for.

14/12 delLorto SHA clones can be had for 25 bucks on e-bay. Search!

just wanted to thank you guys again for your help. i called the moped junk yard place and talked to a guy there named tom. he told me i needed a phav or something like that for my bike. it was more money than i planned to spend, but at least i can get my bike fixed. the carborator was $99.95 plus tax and shipping. about $120.00 with everything. i sure hope this fixes my gas leak. here's a picture of what i bought, http://www.themopedjunkyard.com/tomos/T7d233730.JPG
now i gotta find the windshield and headlight bulb.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that is not the correct carb for your year bike. You need the carb that John recommended in his reply. Did you tell the guy you have a 2000 model Tomos? That bike takes a Dellorto SHA 14/12 carb. The one you bought is for a late model Tomos moped with an A55 motor. You have an A35 motor.

Thats a bummer. Up to 2005 I think they used the delLorto SHA 14/12's after that the one he sold you. One for a reed valved engine (A35)(yours) the other for piston ported (A55). Get on the blower right away or you may have an expensive paper weight for your desk.

when i talked to him, he told me to look on the cylinder. i did and it says a5 on it. isn't that the right part for an a5? he told me it was.

A5 on the cylinder is a A35 motor. Just a different designation from the earlier A3 motor. You have a A35.

A 2000 Tomos LX would have been built with an A35 engine, which uses the Dellorto SHA 14/12 carb.

Unless your engine was swapped for something newer, that's what you need.

However, I still doubt you really need a whole new carburetor. Figure out from where it's leaking and try to address that, first. All you may need is a $3.95 float bowl gasket.

i don't really know how to do that. i'm not a mechanic. i figured this will be easier for me to do. i don't even really know where it is leaking at. the guy i bought it from said it has been sitting since 2005 and now the carborator is leaking. he said he didn't want to fix it and sold it as is.
