Puch Maxi - Squealing Noise From Flywheel Area

Postby Falcor » Tue Oct 01, 2013 9:46 am

I recently picked up a 78 Maxi-Luxe and I've been enjoying tuning it back up. My concern is that, after riding for 20 or so minutes when the engine gets warmed up, there is a squealing sound coming from the flywheel area.

If I take the flywheel cover off it's markedly louder. I am about to pull the flywheel to see if that tells me anything but I wondered if anyone had any idea what this could be? I just changed the clutch fluid but that didn't seem to help at all.

Thanks for any info you can provide - I searched around but couldn't really find anything relating to this issue. The moped is in decent shape for its age, has 2600 miles on it and seems to be all original. I just don't want to destroy it by riding it if it's got a deeper engine issue.

Thanks again,

Chris

Bearing issue maybe.

Thanks for replying. I was hoping it's not an internal bearing but that may be the case.

I had seen mentioned in one other post (can't find it now) that the cam on the flywheel should be periodically lubricated. I was hoping this was the case for this. I just ordered a flywheel puller and I'll pull it off and see. Has anyone ever heard of that before? It'd be great if it was something as simple as that.

Thanks

There's a thick piece of felt on the stator plate that you are supposed to oil to keep the timing cam lubricated. However, even if that felt was dry, it likely wouldn't cause a squealing noise.

I'm with John. I think you've got a bad bearing on the flywheel side.

I'll try to oil that felt but I have little hope as well. Ah well, winter is coming, probably a good time to learn how to rebuild an engine. I'll just ride it sparingly until then lest something break.

Thanks for the advice guys

Lots of u-tube vids on rebuilding a E50.

If you push and pull the flywheel side to side, is there play? I had a warped intake manifold once, sucking in air and running it lean, and it sounded similar. The E50 clutches can be loud too, as the starter plate is loose and can rattle at a high pitch.

There is no side to side play with the flywheel. The sound usually occurs when the bike is fully warmed up. When this happens it also tends to want to rev about 25% higher. Not sure if it's related or not or even abnormal. I'll try to oil that felt a bit this weekend and see if that helps at all. The sound is substantially louder when the flywheel cover is removed.

Thanks

When you say it revs 25% higher, are you meaning idle speed or riding top speed?

It idles 25% higher, maybe closer to 50%.

I took it on a test ride yesterday and it happened again and this time I saw some smoke coming from the engine. Hard to say exactly where it was coming from but looked like from between the upper and lower part of the engine. I babied it home as to not break it.

When it's not hot it moves pretty well. Once it gets hot it kind of bogs, doesn't seem have much power. like it develops some kind of air leak when it gets hot..maybe. I'll defer to your guys judgement.

watched the hour long rebuild video on youtbe last night, seems fairly straightforward.

Thx

Bearings and seals then you need to do next. Don't forget a new gasket kit too. Inspect the piston and cylinder for scoring from overheating and soft seizing.

I would also take a close look at the wrist pin bushing for excessive play.

Hahaha. Thanks guys. I'll probably have a few questions during the rebuild. I appreciate the support.
