cheap simple tools for ped repairs

Postby donp » Thu Jan 20, 2005 9:38 pm

some simple tools that i made to make ped repairs easy.

PISTON DEPTH INDICATOR for setting timing.

you can make a depth gauge that works similar to what is used to set the timing in most service manuals very cheaply, basically for free.
get an old spark plug. cut off the tab on the end. next use a hammer and center punch and break out all the ceramic until all you have left is the steel base of the spark plug. now find a long screw, about 5 inches that will fit thru the spark plug base. find a nut that fits on the screw. find a spring about 2 inches long that will fit over the screw, and up into the spark plug base, but will not slide over the screw head. a mall washer can help. slip the spring onto the screw and then slide it up thru the bottom of the spark plug base and then put the nut on the screw. now mark the end of the screw that sticks out of the top of the spark plug base in 1mm increments, or hold a ruler next to your new tool as you use it. just thread this tool into the spark plug hole and roll the engine over by hand until you see the screw push up out of the spark plug base and stop, then start to move back down. when it reaches its highest point, your at tdc. using the marks on the screw, or using the ruler, you can now back the engine down to the proper setting and adjust the timing so that the points just break at this point. there are two different settings depending on whether you have a one or two speed engine.

SPARK TESTER

ake a new spark plug and a 14mm nut and attach a spark plug wire with the coating stripped back about one inch around the base of the spark plug and then tighten the nut up on the wire. slip a small hose clamp around the wires protective coating and the top ceramic of the spark plug. this will hold the wire steady and prevent the wire from breaking off where it is attached to the spark plug. now, to use the tool all you have to do is plug the spark plug wire from your tool onto the spark plug in your engine. then take your engines spark plug wire and plug it onto your new tool. start your engine up and you can see the spark as the engine runs. great diagnostic tool to determine if spark disappears as your engine dies. very useful and if you use a spark plug with a removeable tip, it will work with any kind of engine. so if your engine has the ngk boot where the plug is threaded at the top, you just take the threaded tip off your tool and hook it up as needed.

STRAP WRENCH TO HOLD FLYWHEELS

find one of those motorcycle spark plug tools with the hole drilled thru it for the bar or screwdriver to be inserted to remove a spark plug on the road. find an old automotive seat belt about 2 feet long. fold the seat belt in half and punch a hole thru the two ends. fasten it to the spark plug tool with a bolt. cut off the excess bolt threads getting the bolt as close the the socket as possible. to use, just slip the belt around the flywheel and roll the socket up on the belt in the proper direction til tight against the flywheel. place a wrench or a socket onto the end of the spark plug socket, or a bar thru the hole at the top if there is one, and tighten the belt up further. you can now loosen and tighten flywheel nuts or bolts, or any other bolts that require you to hold the engine steady.

ENGINE STOP

this is one of the simplest tools ever. all you need is about 2 feet of nylon rope. singe the ends to prevent fraying. remove the spark plug and just feed the rope thru the hole into the cylinder. roll the engine over til it stops and cant turn anymore. loosen or tighten the bolts that you need to work on without the engine turning over.

CARB CLEANING TOOL

another simple one. just a piece of wire from a bread tie, sales tag, or fine electrical wire. i mounted mine on a small metal handle so it wont be lost. great for poking thru tiny holes in carb bodies and their parts.

donp, man you just came to my rescue on a couple of accounts! All of these are plain common sense, but I'd never thought of some of them. This is so cool. Mental note to self: refer to donp's tool-tips, make tools first thing in morning, make my shop life much easier!!
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh, ok, so if carb doesn't work, hold it with a pair of vicegrips, and smash it with the hammer, LOL! Yep, fixes that problem.

the only thing i forgot to mention on the rope is to use a #4 1?2 which cant be cut by the piston as it wont fit into many ports unless they are pretty large. even then, its pretty thick rope and should not cut easily.

i'm glad everyone likes them. the spark tester is my favorite of all. i use it all the time on 2 stroke snow blowers that dont wanna run right. its just an awesome diagnostic tool to have. and for only about $3, well worth every penny.

A 20 foot length of 3 inch pipe and an 8 pound sledge hammer are useful too if you have a Casal.
